A Rapid Biocomposting Process for Dry Leaves and Garden Waste

Overview

Biomass wastes, particularly dry leaves are generated in voluminous amounts round the year. A natural process of dry leaf degradation is a time consuming phenomenon and hence their disposal is generally done through burning which causes several hazards to human health and environment. BARC has developed a method for rapid composting of dry leaves using a formulation based on Trichoderma koningiopsis.
This method of composting obviates the need of burning of leaf litter and thereby contributes to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of Government of India. The duration of compost formation can be considerably reduced by application of this formulation from years (through natural processes) to a few weeks. The process eliminates the cost of transportation involved in disposal of such waste. The compost generated in this process has high carbon content which will be beneficial in enriching organic matter depleted soils.

INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIRED FOR PREPARING FORMULATION

Raw Materials

  • All the raw materials (sorghum grain, talcum powder) used for the development of this formulation are available locally. The strain of Trichoderma can be procured from BARC.

Equipments

  • Autoclave
  • Laminar flow
  • Refrigerator (optional)
  • Common glass wares

Space

  • A small room of 400 sq. ft. area (20 ft. x 20 ft) with minimal facilities.

Power

  • Both single & three phase power connection.

Manpower

  • One skilled technician for preparing formulation and 1-2 skilled workers would be adequate. Actual manpower would depend on production capacity.

Who Should apply


Interested parties with Engineering & Scientific knowledge, good financial background and adequate experience of products manufacturing & fabrication with technical capability in the area of interested technology and having or interested in setting –up facilities for production would be preferred.

Send your Technology Transfer Application form duly filled and signed alongwith a Demand Draft/Bankers cheque of Rs. 500/- (for Indian entities) or US $50/- (for foreign entities) drawn in favour of “Accounts Officer, BARC” as application processing fee on following address:
